BIOGRAPHY: Gideon Fairman

Gideon Fairman was a colonel in the Light Infantry Corps of the Washington Greys, but he was also an academic from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He joined the printers Murray & Draper in Philadelphia in 1810, as a vignette engraver.

Fairman had met Jacob Perkins before then and would later join the Perkins, Bacon printers. For them, Fairman would engrave the 1858 definitive design for Mauritius.
