Leonard Vincent Phillips was born in Peckham, England on 2
August 1876.
In 1894, Phillips started his training at De La Rue.
Although he was mainly trained as a surface print engraver, Phillips also engraved
a number of recess-printed postage stamps. In fact, his first recess-printed
stamps, the 1899 Tasmania pictorial definitive set, were introduced almost
immediately after having finished his apprentice period.
Having shown his ability for engraving pictorial vignettes, Phillips
was allowed to move on to portrait engravings as well. Most famously, he
engraved the Marianne design which was introduced in France in 1944.
Leonard Phillips passed away on 6 April 1954.
