H. Nusser was born Düssseldorf, Germany, in 1821. There, he
attended the Academy of Art, where he studied under Josef Keller.
In June 1866, a design by J Vürtheim was chosen for a new
Dutch definitive set. H Nusser engraved the die, but this was not adopted. The
head of King William III was thought to be too youthful. So a new die was made
on which Nusser engraved a more mature portrait of the king. This second die
was accepted and used for the complete series which was introduced in 1867.
H. Nusser passed away in Düsseldorf in 1883. His engraving
of the Dutch coat of arms appeared posthumously on three Dutch banknotes issued
in 1904.
