BIOGRAPHY: Frantisek Horniak

Frantisek Horniak was born in Zikava, Slovakia on 16 June 1956. At the age of fifteen he went to the Secondary School of Applied Arts in Kremnica, where he specialised in metal works. In 1975, he graduated from the Department of Surface and Plastic Decorations of Metal. Six years later, he landed a job as a postmark creator at the Technical Centre of Communication in Bratislava.

During Horniak's decade-long career as postmark creator, he received his training as an engraver by the stamp engraver Martin Cinovsky. After Slovakia became an independent nation in 1993, Horniak became an important member of the first wave of stamp engravers dominating the stamp catalogue.

Many of Horniak's stanps have received Grand Prix awards. Among those are his 2003 Art stamp depicting Mednansky's Stream behind the Barn, and his 2007 Bratislava Castle engraving.
