BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
William Slater joined Perkins, Bacon & Co in 1847 and retired in 1875. He was their chief engraver and was involved in all the classics of that firm.
The engraving of the Chalon portrait for the 1855 New Zealand stamps was done by William Humphrys, but Salter may well have engraved the insciptions and value panels, and has done some touching up of the portrait.
