BIOGRAPHY: José Manuel Mata Martin

José Manuel Mata Martin was born in Casa del Monte, Cáceres, Spain in 1931. He attended the National School of Graphic Arts in Madrid from 1948. Two years later he went to the National School of Ceramics, while also studying drawing and etching at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. To complete his crowded education schedule he also went to the Apprentice School of the FNMT-RCM in  Madrid in 1951.

That latter move landed him a job as an assistant artistic engraver at the engraving department of the FNMT-RCM in Madrid from 1955. Ten years later his first stamp engraving was issued: the 70c value from that year’s Tourism series, depicting a view of Zamora.

More additions to that series, and the other long-running series of castles followed during the 1960s. During the 1970s and 1980 many more issues followed, until Mata Martin retired, in 1993.
