BIOGRAPHY: Reuben Kenneth Barrick

Reuben Barrick was born in Sedalia, Missouri, on 14 March 1916. During his studies at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art in Washington, DC, Barrick became an apprentice at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). He worked on a pantograph machine from 1938 to 1943, after which he joined the US Navy.

In 1948 Barrick returned to the BEP, and became a letter and frame engraver. His first stamp engraving dates from that very same year, the US issue honouring bereaved mothers. Several issues followed in the years after, for which Barrick engraved mostly only the lettering and sometimes a frame as well.

In 1959, Barrick got to engrave a complete stamp; the 4c value marking the tenth anniversary of the NATO. Soon after, Barrick would become Assistant Chief and subsequently Chief of the Engraving Division. In 1971, he retired. Reuben Barrick passed away in Port Republic, Virginia, on 10 July 1984.
