BIOGRAPHY: Joachim Clarence Benzing

Joachim Benzing was born in Ellicott City, MD, on 19 November 1880. He started his artstic education modelling clay under a medallist at the US Mint. From this, he moved on to engraving, and in 1900 he graduated and started working at the American Bank Note Company.

Five years later he became employed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and it with them that he began engraving stamps. His first work was the engraving of the lettering on a number of definitives from the Washington definitive issued in 1908. He would remain a frame and lettering engraver until 1925, when he got the opportunity to engrave the 'Minute Man', which appears on the 5c value of the US set issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

Several more engravings followed, whereby Benzing created both frames and vignettes. In the 1930s, Benzing would become the Chief of the Engraving Division, and in 1943 he retired. He passed away in Orlando, Fl, on 1 January 1970.
