BIOGRAPHY: Alfred Sealey (aka Sealy)

Alfred Sealey (also known as Sealy) was born in New York, USA, in 1815 or thereabouts. He had been engraving ever since the late 1830s. In 1860 he joined the American Bank Note Company.

Sealey’s main strength was portrait engravings and together with a small group of engravers he would strongly influence the development of the American Bank Note style of engraving.

Most of his portraits are for banknotes but he did engrave a small number of stamps as well, for New Brunswick and Newfoundland. His engraved portrait of the then Prince of Wales on the 17c New Brunswick of 1860 was also used on a New Brunswick $3 banknote issued in the same year.

Alfred Sealey probably passed away in 1868, in Canada.
