BIOGRAPHY: Edward P. Archer

Edward P. Archer was born in New York on 28 December 1924. His initial studies were at the Mechanics Institute in New York, but in January 1941 he entered the American Bank Note Company where he became an apprentice of the engraver William F. Ford. Archer stayed at the ABNC until July 1952, when he moved to the Jeffries Bank Note Company. In July 1967 Archer came to work for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. This is where his philatelic career started. Archer engraved stamps from 1968 until his retirement in November 1989.

Besides the many commemorative issues, Archer also engraved a good number of definitive stamps. This started out in his very first year as a stamp engraver, when he got the chance to engrave the 30c value (a portrait of the educational reformer John Dewey) from the ‘Prominent Americans’ definitive series, introduced in 1965. Some four more values in that set followed. Archer also contributed heavily to subsequent large definitive sets, such as the 1975 Americana series, and the Transport series of the 1980s.

Edward P Archer passed away in 1990.
