James David, son of the stamp engraver James Smillie, was born in 1833. Like his father, James D would be an engraver as well, working for the American Bank Note Company, but he would eventually turn to painting and become an important artist.
From 1859 to 1879, a few stamps were issued engraved by Smillie, of which the Canadian 5c beaver of 1859 is by far the most iconic. His others include the first Nicaraguan stamps, issued in 1862, and a number of portrait stamps of the 1858-1859 Brazil definitives.
