BIOGRAPHY: George W Thurber

George W Thurber was born in 1827. In 1867, Thurber was the treasurer of the Manhattan Engraving Company. He went on to be the vice-president of the Hamilton Bank Note Company in 1881 and a founder of its successor, the Hamilton Bank Note Engraving and Printing Company in 1884.

From research it has become clear that Thurber was closely involved with Nicholas Seebeck, the manufacturer of many South American stamps of the late 19th century, but other than engravings for postal stationery items which were printed by letterpress, no specific ‘Seebeck stamps’ have been attributed to Thurber. The only stamp issues, therefore, so far credited to Thurber are three values (2c, 3c, 12c) from the United States definitives of 1869, for which he engraved the frame and lettering.

Thurber passed away in 1908.
