The engraver Robert Clayton from Sydney had become involved in the process of creating New South Wales' first stamps in 1849 by tendering for a printing press, dies and plates during the passing of the Postal Act. He had stated he could produce any number of identical stamps from a single die, but his system was not taken up after the essays he submitted, in lithography rather than recess-printed, were found to be of inferior quality
However, as time was pressing on, he did get the commission to engrave the 1d value based on one of his designs, with the other two values being engraved by John Carmichael and H C Jervis. He would never again receive another request for engraving stamps, though.
