DOWNEY, Alfred J.

INFORMATION

When, in 1929, Alfred Downey was asked to re-engrave three values of the Newfoundland Publicity issue for Perkins, Bacon & Co, he had to follow the engravings of the original De La Rue plates as closely as possible, yet some differences may be distinguished. On the 3c, the portraits are more upright, the pearls on the crown and the pillars are shaded, and the top value tablet has horizontal lines only. On the 4c, the shading of the 4 is of horizontal lines only, the side ornaments have become roses, the feather no longer touches the R of FOUR and the portrait is smaller. Finally, on the 15c, the L of leaving is under the T of First, and the apostrophe no longer breaks the line above it.
