In 1851, in preparation of Canada's first definitives, James Ellis submitted two engraved essays of the beaver design by Sir Sandford Fleming, in the values of 3d and 1s. They resemble the engraving by Alfred Jones which was eventually chosen.
In 1865, Ellis also submitted two illustrated essays for Canada's first registration stamps, printed in black on vermilion paper.
